The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t consider them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the reality behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It is a very easy technique, which can be explained without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully experiencing its power in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying their best to block the spell.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been circulating for quite some time now. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the outside world, but stays completely conscious of the goings on around him. That person is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept new inputs easily.

Another myth, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of humans. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have used the identical hypnosis procedure on all subjects without focusing on their individual traits. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any communication involved. The state of trance is not a hypnotic state either. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, while the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication.

Another myth is that physical and behavioural changes in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is obviously not magic that it can transform the physical appearance of a person on its own. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of motivation in a person.

Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of a person, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
