Major Attributes Of A Graphic Designer

by Harrison James

Whenever the term graphic designer comes across, one is bound to imagine about the kind of job it may be. It’s a common question among common people that ‘what does a graphic designer do?’ The question, whether he is into advertising or computer graphics, leaves people in the world of confusion. To solve it out, let’s begin with splitting the words ‘graphic’ and ‘designer’.

A graphic is a pictorial representation. Designing means formulating a specific plan with an intended purpose and effect. Thus, we can conclude that a graphic designer is one who prepares specific pictorial illustrations to meet an intended purpose or effect. They find the most effective way to get messages across in print, electronic and film media, using a variety of methods such as colour, type, illustration, photography animation, and various prints and layout techniques. Graphic designers develop the overall layout and production of designs of magazines, newspapers, journals, corporate report and other publications. In the simplest possible terms, a graphic designer creates images for a defined purpose.

Graphic designers are also involved in the promotion and advertising field. They plan and execute the layout designs of promotional materials, company products, brochures and other advertising materials. They also prepare company logos and carry out their print campaigns. Apart from the print media, graphic designers also prepare websites’ layouts and online portals; they create and modify the titles that run at the start and end of TV programs and movies.

The basic responsibility of a graphic designer is to draw an illustration that can carry forward a client’s message. He or she also has to be aware of public sentiments as the illustration should be simple enough to be understood by common people; yet, it also should have a touch of an art piece.

Information technology has come as the greatest help for graphic designers. They can use computer software to generate images or create animations for their projects. Graphic designers, who have got some standing in the corporate world, start their own business. They hire a workforce and also buy machinery and computer software for their projects. Additionally, they need some good computer professionals that can upgrade their systems; graphic designing requires an up-to-date software and equipment.

This profession requires a complete knowledge of computers and designing software. Although graphic designers are not involved in the actual print making or writing computer codes, they have to be aware of the current trends. Just like an architect, who has to make plans for a house, but is not actually involved in construction, graphic designers need knowledge of the above-mentioned specialties.

Graphic designers also have to work with many other professionals to achieve their daily goals. They have to hire copywriters, photographers, editors and managers to oversee the daily flow of work. There is a fierce competition in the industry, and graphic designers need to work hard to achieve their goals.

Fortunately, graphic designers have plenty of options when it comes to employment. There is always a demand for online and print designs. A graphic designer with bachelor degree in computer design can earn a respectable living. Experience, however, is counted as the most important factor in the hiring of graphic designers.
