This may sound like an obvious question to ask, “What do you want to use your new MP3 player for?” This is really the first step to get the most out of your MP3 player. It also saves a lot of time and frustration. As it’s easy to find that the player you’ve bought does lots of things that you don’t need and doesn’t do the things that you do need.

It also makes choosing your player much easier and enjoyable, as you may find you are overcome by choice, not really knowing which player is better, or more suited to your needs, than another. Is it just for listening to music while you are jogging or working out? Do you use the radio while in the kitchen? Or are you looking for something that you can plug into your TV and watch videos with?

MP3 players can be controlled with by simple buttons, for example, press to play and select, volume, and up and down to view your music library. There are also many MP3 players that use touch screens, including the very popular Apple iPod touch. Lots of of people do prefer touch screens, finding them easy and enjoyable to use. If you haven’t used one before, touch screens can take a bit of practice to get used to.

You will need to find out if your music and movie files are compatible with your MP3 player. One of the main problems having bought a player, is to find that it doesn’t play your files. While we tend to think that all music files are MP3′s, this is not actually not the case. While MP3 is perhaps the most popular music file format, there are plenty more. We have Windows Media Audio, or WMA, Real Media or RM, and Apple use a format called AAC.

If you choose a player, and then find it’s not compatible with your music collection, there is a simple solution. You can convert your music files into a format that is suited to your player. There are plenty of software programs available do this and many of them are free. You may also find that there is a program provided with your MP3 player.

Asking a friend or family member that you know uses an MP3 player, can be very helpful. They can show you how it works, and you can see how suitable it will be for you.
